Presentation: Putting on your face, or applying makeup, is an activity most women and some men do daily. Curator, Jan Loverin, explores a brief history of this ritual and its meanings – from protecting our eyes from sun glare, to understanding the significance of “lip candy,” to disparate challenges due to skin color – makeup is an integral part of culture and society. This, along with developments in the hair care industry, generates an engaging lecture, providing background, understanding, and insight into the importance of appearance.

Speaker: Jan Loverin has been employed by the Nevada State Museum since 1985. Her undergraduate degree is in Biology from Whitter College and her M.S. is from University of Nevada, Reno in Home Economics with an emphasis in Museum Studies. She has presented papers on costume history nationally and internationally. She and her husband live on the Old 1862 Ranch, where she is a passionate gardener.

This lecture will be presented via Zoom. Registration is free to members and $8 for non-members.
