Nevada State Museum Hosts Dia de Los Muertos Celebration in Downtown Carson City
Family Friendly Event with Cultural Ties to the Community
A long tradition in Carson City, the Nevada State Museum’s 19th Annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration will take place on November 7 and 8.
“The Dia de Los Muertos holiday is deeply personal to those that celebrate,” said Nevada State Museum Director Jen Roger. “It is an honor for the museum to provide this space to for our community to remember and celebrate their loved ones.”
Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) is a traditional Mexican festival, with the origins stem from death rites rituals performed by indigenous peoples of the Americas. As part of the cyclical nature of death and life, the celebration includes the belief that our loved ones return on this holy day to be commune with the living. A significant part is the creation of ofrendas or altars for the dead with photos, flowers, candles and favorite foods.
An ofrenda presentation will be held on Friday, November 7 from 5-7:00 p.m. in the Nevada State Museum’s Dema Guinn Concourse. A variety of alters will be created by community groups and businesses, like Boys and Girls Club of Northern Nevada, Nevada Donor Network, Death Doula Co-Op, and La Paloma Funeral Services. Traditional sweet treats will be served.
On Saturday, November 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the Nevada State Museum will open its doors with free activities, including live music and folk dancing performances, crafts and face painting. Food trucks will also be curbside along Curry Street serving traditional Mexican street fare.
Admission to the Nevada State Museum, located at 600 N. Carson St., is free on Friday evening and all day on Saturday.
