Join the Nevada State Museum in celebrating Lei Day on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In Hawaii, “May Day is Lei Day” and we are sharing this tradition with the Northern Nevada community with a lei making demonstration by ʻŌiwi O Hawaiʻi, Northern Nevada Hawaiian Civic Club.

Lei Day will also include a beginner keiki (child) and a beginner wahine (woman) hula lesson by Kumu Hula (hula teacher) Dalyn Aiu-Parpal; Hawaiian music by the band Pono; and a hula performance by the Reno-based hālau hula (hula school) Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokāne.

Break out your Aloha wear and bring your sweet tooth as Island Breeze Events, LLC will be selling shave ice! We will also have hands-on activities for the kids and a temporary exhibit that illustrates the various types of materials used for lei making as well as a brief history of Lei Day.

Schedule:

  • Accept lei for the Lei Contest 9-10 a.m.
  • Lei making demonstration by ʻŌiwi O Hawaiʻi, Northern Nevada Hawaiian Civic Club 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Shave Ice, Island Breeze Events, LLC, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Hawaiian music by Pono, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
  • Beginner keiki (child) hula lesson by Kumu Hula (hula teacher) Dalyn Aiu-Parpal, 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Hula performance by Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokāne, 12:30-1:15 p.m.
  • Beginner wahine (woman) hula lesson by Kumu Hula (hula teacher) Dalyn Aiu-Parpal, 1:30-2 p.m.

Admission to the Nevada State Museum is FREE on Lei Day!
