Lei Day

E komo mai (welcome)! The Nevada State Museum is celebrating Lei Day on Saturday, April 27^th from 10 am to 2 pm. In Hawaii, “May Day is Lei Day” and we are sharing this tradition with the northern Nevada community with a lei making demonstration by Malcolm Leihulu Delovio, a cultural practitioner. Nā ʻŌiwi O Hawaiʻi, Northern Nevada Hawaiian Civic Club, will teach visitors to make kupeʻe (wristlets) made out of kī (ti) leaf. Kī has many uses in Hawaiian culture, ranging from hula skirts, food wrappers, to house thatch.

Lei Day will include performances by two hālau hula (hula school) based in Reno, Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokāne and Matasina Polynesian Review. The band Pono will be playing traditional Hawaiian music and the food truck, Aloha Shack, will be serving Hawaiian style plate lunches. We will also have hands-on activities for the kids and a temporary exhibit that illustrates the various types of materials used for lei making as well as a brief history of Lei Day.

Schedule for Lei Day:

Greeting and time with crafters 10 – 10:30 am

Hula Performance 10:30 – 11:15 am (Ka Pā Hula ʻO Kawaiolanoelaniokāne)

Open time for crafts or food 11:15 am – 11:45 am

Musicians 11:45 am – 12:45 pm

Open time for crafts or food 12:45– 1:15 pm

Hula performance 1:15 – 2 pm (Matasina Polynesian Review)
