Description

Juneteenth, which was named a federal holiday last year, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas, and informed the slaves that the Civil War was over, and they were liberated. The news reached the enslaved African-Americans 2.5  years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is the oldest known tradition honoring the end of slavery in the United States. This year the Nevada Board of Museums and History have decided to observe Juneteenth by offering free admission to the Nevada State Museum, Carson City.

On June 10th Gov. Sisolak proclaimed June 19, 2022 Juneteenth National Freedom Day. See proclamation.

This event will also include a display of the art created during the “How You Got Here” Creative Aging program funded by the Nevada Arts Council and Lifetime Arts, educational displays from Our Story Inc and the museum, and light refreshments.

This program is funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
