Description

Starting Saturday, April 10th we will be minting a special medallion that features Abraham Curry, the founder of Carson City and first superintendent of the Mint when it opened on Jan. 6, 1870.

The coin press is the only one of its kind in existence that is still operational in its original building (the Nevada State Museum occupies the former Mint). Each Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM, volunteers power up Coin Press 1 to give visitors the opportunity to see it operate and, if they wish, to purchase a blank medallion in the museum store and have it minted on the press.

The Curry medallion is a limited-edition minting that will end when 2,000 medallions are struck. The medallions are half ounce, .999 fine silver and cost $75. All medallions are struck on Coin Press No. 1 and bear the CC mintmark.

Museum admission is required to watch demonstrations. Admission is $8 for adults and free for members and children age 17 and younger.
