Description

Join us on Saturday, as we resume minting our replica 1870 half dollar, the first half dollar coin produced by the Carson City Mint on Coin Press No. 1. The dies were sculpted by retired U.S. Mint engraver, Tom Rogers, and feature the historic Liberty Seated design. Long in use by the U.S. Treasury, the Carson City Mint was one of the last mints to produce coins featuring this design. Like the original, the replica bears the CC mint mark.

Each Saturday from 11 AM to 3 PM, volunteers power up Coin Press No. 1. Visitors have an opportunity to see it operate and, if they wish, to purchase a silver blank in the museum store and watch as it is minted on the press.

Our limited series replica began in 2019 as part of our Mint 150 celebration. It is made using specially sourced silver from the Coeur Rochester mine near Lovelock and processed into .999 fine silver blanks. The cost of the medallion is $125.

Museum admission is required to view demonstration. Admission is $8 for adults and free for members and children age 17 and under. Masks and social distancing is required inside the museum.
