CANCELLED due to COVID-19 museum closure

LOGAN is the award-winning biography of a frontier sheriff caught between the lawlessness of the Old West and the rise of 20th century justice. On April 7, 1906, Nye County Sheriff Tom Logan did what he had done countless times—eject an unruly gambler from a sporting resort. However, on this morning in Manhattan, Nevada, the gambler turned on the three-term sheriff, who was unarmed and dressed only in his nightshirt. The outraged man pulled a pistol and shot Logan five times. Charged with killing one of the most popular lawmen of the day, the accused was later acquitted of murder—an outcome that remains a topic of controversy to this day. One of the killer’s attorneys was a young Patrick McCarran, a future Nevada US Senator. Other well-known personalities connected to this story include Tasker Oddie, George Wingfield, Jack Longstreet, Judge Peter Breen, “Diamondfield Jack” Davis, Wyatt Earp and the Pitttman brothers, one of whom was the prosecuting attorney at the trial.

Author Jackie Borr knew nothing about the life and death of her great-grandfather until she attended a family reunion in Central Nevada in 1985. There she heard a variety of accounts about the day he was killed, a shameful event that was rarely mentioned in her family. In the process of unearthing more information she discovered actual witness accounts, countless newspaper articles, and even more importantly, insights into how her great-grandfather  had lived, interacted with many historically prominent figures, and served with distinction as an officer of the law. Her file of notes eventually grew into several boxes of research and finally into an acclaimed book endorsed by prominent historians such as Mark-Hall Patton, Guy Rocha, and Michael Fischer.

Cost: Admission is $8 for adults, members and children age 17 and under are free.
