This presentation by the author will discuss LOGAN the award-winning biography of a frontier sheriff caught between the lawlessness of the Old West and the rise of 20^th century justice. On April 7, 1906, Nye County Sheriff Tom Logan did what he had done countless times—eject an unruly gambler from a sporting resort. However, on this morning in Manhattan, Nevada, the gambler turned on the three-term sheriff, who was unarmed and dressed only in his nightshirt. The outraged man pulled a pistol and shot Logan five times. Charged with killing one of the most popular lawmen of the day, the accused was later acquitted of murder—an outcome that remains a topic of controversy to this day. One of the killer’s attorneys was a young Patrick McCarran, a future Nevada US Senator. Other well-known personalities connected to this story include Tasker Oddie, George Wingfield, Jack Longstreet, Judge Peter Breen, “Diamondfield Jack” Davis, Wyatt Earp and the Pittman brothers, one of whom was the prosecuting attorney at the trial.

The author Jackie Boor began her freelance writing career in 1968 as a teen correspondent for two Northern California newspapers. Her first major work, the award-winning memoir of LTC. Gene Boyer, was published in 2010, and is titled Inside the President’s Helicopter: Reflections of a White House Senior Pilot. A resident of Sacramento, CA, Jackie began researching Nevada Sheriff Tom Logan, her great grand-father, in 1985 and spent 30 years gathering content for LOGAN: The Honorable Life and Scandalous Death of a Western Lawman. Besides history and gardening, she enjoys spending time with her family–both those in the present and from the past.
