Coin Press No.1 Demonstrations

Every Saturday from 11:00 am-3:00 pm we will provide minting demonstrations in the Historic Carson City Mint Building. Witness Coin Press No. 1, a 150 year old coin press, mint .999 fine silver commemorative medallions in the same building it produced U.S. coinage 150 years ago.

If you are interested in purchasing a .999 fine silver commemorative medallion visit the museum store between 11:00 am-3:00 pm and bring your receipt to the Coin Press Gallery in the Historic Carson City Mint. You will watch your medallion being minted just for you.

To honor and raise funds for Nevada’s health care workers, the Nevada State Museum is minting a special medallion during demonstrations of Coin Press No. 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday. Visitors may purchase .999 fine silver planchets and watch as they are minted on the press. The cost for a planchet is $100; a portion of the proceeds will go to the COVID-19 Relief Fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Western Nevada. All visitors to the museum will need to wear a face covering and maintain social distancing protocols.

“Nevada has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, and our front-line health care workers are among the hardest hit,” Myron Freedman, Nevada State Museum, Carson City director, said. “The museum is glad to offer this opportunity to honor their contributions and give back to the men and women who work so hard to protect the community’s health.”

The design of the Nevada Health Care Heroes medallion, sculpted by retired U.S. Mint engraver Tom Rogers, is based on an image of a health care worker at one of the COVID-19 testing stations set up by the Nevada National Guard. All medallions will be minted on Coin Press No. 1, the first coin press to operate at the Carson City Mint.

Museum admission is required to watch demonstrations. Admission is $8 for adults, members and children age 17 and under are free.
